“The greatest burden a child must bear is the unlived life of its parents.” – Carl Jung
What comes up for you when you read this? 🤔
To me it’s a reflection of the inverse – what we’ve been talking about here and on the podcast for years.
That the greatest GIFT and contribution (to yourself, your kids, the world and humanity at large) is to [know, honor, be] who you truly are in this lifetime.
Like if you’re all in on parenting and you WANT TO BE, make sure your kiddos see and feel that it’s not a sacrifice (that they “should” feel guilty about or burdened by), it’s a genuine desire of your heart in this lifetime.
Likewise if you’re all in on your work and you WANT TO BE… Let ’em see that you love it and help them see how it helps them do what THEY love too.
If you’ve got a blend of work and parenting that works for you right now, help them see how that benefits YOU and benefits them.
Lather, rinse, repeat as values, goals, and circumstances shift.
If you can help connect the dots to show them how them honoring who THEY are links to you honoring who YOU are – that you make a perfect team – they’ll likely feel the spillover benefits, confidence, gratitude for that and (potentially?) be more likely to keep that trend going as they grow.
Your values-driven life is a permission slip for theirs.
THAT’S WHAT I’M HOPING, ANYWAY.
Check back in 30-40 years. 😛
