THE POWER OF HONEST (RESPECTFUL) FEEDBACK

*note to a friend who wants to start a biz but is super uncomfortable giving directives and constructive criticism to adults…


good news: you won’t be an a-hole because that’s just not in your nature.


You can think about the benefit to them for you being honest about what’s working and what’s not (if you were a service provider and someone was not liking the work, you’d wanna know bc you WANT to do a great job!). You’d be helping them improve their skills (and / or find a better fit in a more extreme scenario).


What would the drawbacks be to not saying anything?


Resentment (on your part and / or theirs), poor quality or misaligned work, which leads to lower sales, then you can’t afford to pay yourself OR them and then that’s the end of that.


SO. Healthy lines of communication facilitate healthy profits and REALationships too.


Also: You can bake regular reviews into the agreement and be super honest up front: I’m really uncomfortable giving feedback to adults (even though I’m amazing doing this with kids because #teacher) SO I’d love to create a system where we can regularly connect around what’s working, what’s not, and how we can make things even better.


**make sure you’re hiring people who won’t easily take things personally. that could be a decision point and deal breaker.


Ex. “I feel super awkward about giving direct feedback BUT I know it’s necessary and it’s something I’m working on. If we work together, I’ll create regular opportunities for us to check in and ensure this is a great fit for both of us. Does that work for you?”


(If it doesn’t, they’re not a fit!)
