this note was for a colleague who shared she was nervous to meet me at an event we were both set to speak at tomorrow (she mentioned nerves related to slide quality and handshakes skills and playfully asked for tips for not putting your foot in your mouth when you meet someone whose work you’ve admired from afar):
THANK YOU. I’m equal parts ridiculously flattered and ridiculously humbled because dang.
Preeeetty sure you’re playing, but JUST IN CASE (since these are real thoughts that pretty much everyone I know has had at one point or another), I’ll take the opp to address each point.
*dons digi-reading glasses*
1. If you’re down, let’s skip the handshake and go for a hug. Prob solved.
2. re: powerpoint in case you need the reminder: it doesn’t need to be perf; just needs to be shared! AND I haven’t even made mine yet, so there’s that. I’m already super inspired that you’re showing up to serve this crew Friday. If I judge your slides, I’m also simultaneously judging my own (and I’d rather not), so there’s that 😛
3. re: your Q on keeping your foot outta your mouth in *any* scenario when you’ve put a fallible human on a pedestal: If and when you can REALLY see that anything you’ve ever admired in someone legit also exists in YOU in its own form, you’ll be able to feel present, grateful, super grounded and in your heart vs. your head. You’ll have both feet on the ground (and at LEAST 4-5′ from your mouth). 👣
4. For anyone reading this has live event butterflies from time to time (I know I do / have!) – you’ll find lots of great perspectives in the comments of this post I shared years ago before my first live event for biz: nikkielledgebrown.com/live-event-tips
HIGH FIVE to all of us for getting out of the comfort zone / pajama pants every now and then so we can GROW.
Can’t wait to meet you!
